Community Yarn Art Installation

Celebrating 140 years with Colour and Creativity

Calling on all students, parents, grandparents, staff, Old Andreans and all friends of the school to join us in creating a fabulous art installation by yarn wrapping the pillar at the front of the school as part of our 140 year celebration next year. We welcome contributions from everyone!

This exciting and fun project invites the entire community to collaborate on an art installation, combining traditional crafts with a modern artistic vision to celebrate our wonderful school's rich history and legacy, demonstrating our school spirit.

All ages and all skill levels are encouraged to participate – the more the merrier and the more we can yarn wrap – those pillars are enormous!

What you need to do

You can knit or crochet squares that will form the foundation of our yarn wrapping installation.

Here are some recommendations to get you started:

Shape and size: Knit or crochet a square that will be 20cm x 20 cm (8 inches).

Colour: Use blue, white and gold (school colours)

Wool or yarn: Acrylic yarn is recommended for durability and weather resistance. Worsted or bulky yarn (10 ply in Australia) works best.

Knitting:

  • Recommend knitting needles 5mm or 6mm (size 8)
  • Aim for 32 - 36 stitches, adjusting for your tension (ie how tight or loose your stitches are)
  • Continue until you have a square; then cast off and start a new one.

Crocheting:

  • Recommend a crochet hook 6mm
  • Create a foundation chain that measures 20cm
  • Single chain or your preferred stitch in each chain until you reach 20cm (square)

All skill levels are welcomed and we encourage individual creativity and unique embellishments.
